The space under your desk is some of the most useful storage in a home office, and it's usually wasted. The right under-desk file cabinet keeps paperwork, chargers and supplies within arm's reach and off the desktop, so your workspace feels calm instead of cluttered. This guide covers how to measure, which drawer setup to choose, locks, materials and mobility, plus our favorite picks. Every cabinet in our filing cabinet collection ships free to the contiguous US.
Step 1: Measure the space under your desk
Most desks are 28 to 30 inches tall, and the underside of the desktop (or any keyboard tray or apron) is usually 25 to 27 inches off the floor. Measure from the floor to the lowest point under the desk and leave at least an inch of clearance.
- Height: under-desk cabinets typically run 22 to 26 inches tall with casters. Measure with the wheels included.
- Width: measure between the desk legs and your chair's path. Slim cabinets are 12 to 15 inches wide; wider models run 16 to 19 inches.
- Depth: 15 to 18 inches is standard. Make sure the cabinet doesn't stick out past the desk edge where your knees go.
Don't have room underneath? A low lateral cabinet beside the desk works as a printer stand and a file drawer at once.
Step 2: Pick a drawer layout
- 3-drawer (2 box + 1 file): the most popular layout. Two shallow drawers for pens, chargers and sticky notes, plus a deep bottom drawer for hanging folders.
- 2-drawer lateral: wide drawers hold files side to side and the top works as a printer stand. Best beside the desk.
- Open file basket: a lidded rolling basket is a softer, decor-friendly option for a few dozen folders in a living room or bedroom office.
Check the hanging-rail size too. Most cabinets fit letter folders, many also fit legal or A4, and adjustable rails give you the most flexibility.
Step 3: Decide if you need a lock
If you keep tax returns, passports, medical records or client files at home, choose a cabinet with a key lock. Some locks secure every drawer at once; others lock only the top drawer. Keep the spare key somewhere other than your desk.
Step 4: Steel or wood?
- Steel is slim, strong and fire-resistant at the surface, and drawers run on smooth ball-bearing slides. It's ideal for heavy paperwork and often arrives nearly assembled.
- Wood and engineered wood look warmer and blend with living-room or bedroom decor. Look for scratch- and stain-resistant finishes.
- Woven designs add texture and work well where the cabinet stays on show.
Step 5: Rolling or stationary?
Casters let you roll the cabinet out when you need it and tuck it away for meetings. Look for at least two locking casters so it stays put, and a caster or anti-tip design that keeps a fully open file drawer stable.
